From “Someday” to NOW: How Dimension Changed My Perspective (Guest Post)

I'm in my 40s. Looking back, if I’m honest, I’d have to say I've been putting off attending events like Dimension for most of my adult life… at least the last 15 years.

That’s a sobering thought, especially since making it to Dimension has been my ultimate goal all along.

What do I mean by that? If making it to Dimension has been my “ultimate goal,” how have I been putting it off?

Let's go back to the beginning.

Perspective Shift #1 (Clarify Priorities)

Soon after Big Dave returned from Europe in 2005 with the vision to start Dimension, I attended a 1-night trance party and caught a tiny sliver of the type of immersive, transcendent experience that could be possible.

Since then, the idea has always been in the back of my mind: All I want is more of that. I need to work hard and be successful so I can one day come to New Zealand to Dimension every year.

Well, I finally made it to Dimension for the first time in 2023, then again in 2024 (so, 2 years out of the 15+ it’s been my goal). There have been a few other 1- or 2-nighters through the years, but I've only had the full Dimension experience twice.

Perspective Shift #2 (Empower Change)

As I look back on my life, I sense an undeniable shift in my thinking. My priorities have changed to where the idea of “work hard to achieve success so I can one day enjoy myself” just doesn't make sense anymore.

It’s as if the mental mechanics needed to justify putting off fun and festivals are simply gone. The ability is missing. I'd be kidding myself if I tried.

Ten years ago, I might have written a whole book about events like Dimension serving as the ultimate “reward” for diligence and sacrifice.

The feeling now is: I just need to get there. I need to be around those sorts of people who find meaning in the same things I do. I need to be in that environment. No excuses. No big plans.

And just like that first 1-night event all those years ago that left me yearning for more, I’m convinced it’s the experience of Dimension itself that’s changed my perspective.

I’m finally able to lean in and embrace the fact that I’m no longer willing to settle or compromise for the sake of “one day” living the life I want.

See you at Dimension 2025. I can’t wait!
